I. Basic Information

· Chemical Formula: Heptahydrate FeSO₄・7H₂O (molecular weight 278.05), Monohydrate FeSO₄・H₂O (molecular weight 169.92).

· Appearance: Heptahydrate is a pale blue-green powder; monohydrate is a grayish-white powder.

· Solubility: Easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol, insoluble in anhydrous methanol.

• Stability: Easily weathers in dry air and oxidizes to brownish-yellow basic ferric sulfate in humid environments; loses some water of crystallization when heated to 64℃, and decomposes at red heat to produce ferric oxide and release sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide.

II. Production Methods

• Sulfuric Acid Process: Sulfuric acid and mother liquor are mixed and heated to approximately 80℃, then waste iron filings are added to react and generate a ferrous sulfate solution. After clarification, cooling, crystallization, and centrifugation, the product is obtained.

• Titanium Dioxide By-product Process: Ferrous sulfate is a by-product produced during the decomposition of ilmenite by sulfuric acid to produce titanium dioxide. After precipitation, freezing, separation, and recrystallization, the finished product is obtained.

1. Core Uses

• Water Treatment: A commonly used low-cost flocculant that forms precipitates with impurities in water, clarifying wastewater. It can also be used in the treatment of circulating cooling water and helps remove some harmful substances from water bodies, reducing water pollution levels.

• Chemical Industry and Pigment Industry: A core raw material for the manufacture of inorganic pigments such as iron salts, iron oxide red, and magnetic iron oxide.
